A straight trend indicates a market with more competitors, while a narrow trend indicates a market with fewer competitors. Meanwhile, the legal industry continues to experience surges in demand, with the 2018 Hays Job Report for New Zealand reporting a shortage of candidates across the sector.

“There are other reasons why legal roles can be difficult to fill,” he said. “The legal industry has a reputation for being inefficient, and in an age where people are looking for flexibility in their jobs, inflexibility is a real barrier to change.”
The data shows the roles of nurses – midwives, neonatal, SCN and neonatal NICU are the hardest to fill. The trend with a 5% decrease in requests for advertising effect is also strengthening.
Hobson said that candidates for the roles are “always in demand”. “The ratio of qualified midwives to registered nurses is low,” she said. “This is an important area of nursing specialization.”
Many other nursing roles prove difficult to fill. These include Nursing – Administrative, Psychiatric Nursing, Diagnostics and Rehabilitation Health and Nursing – Ambulance, Critical Care and Intensive Care. Nursing represents the largest occupational group in New Zealand’s healthcare sector and is a growing workforce. Looking back on research four years ago, research by the New Zealand Health Workforce revealed that the average age of nurses in the country was 46.3 years. He also noted that the risk of staff shortages increases as the proportion of experienced nurses approaches retirement. This is a particular problem in special areas with a higher average age, such as palliative care (where the average age of nurses is 52) and mental health (where the average age is 51).

Data shows that positions in construction law are difficult to fill. Supply compared to demand, however, softened, with applications increasing by 37.1% for the advertising effect.
McCarthy attributes the increase in demand to the infrastructure boom. “We see an increased demand for real estate lawyers, which is also very difficult to fill due to the downturn in the commercial real estate market.”
The list also includes roles in insurance and pension law as well as labor relations and labor law. Corporate and business roles are also difficult to fill; and the trend is still limited, with applications for advertising effect falling by 7.8%.
With many jobs in the healthcare, medical and legal industries more difficult to fill than others, experts say employers need to look beyond basic pay to attract top talent.

“Healthy candidates are attracted to a positive and supportive workplace because their day-to-day work can be hard,” says Hobson. “Employers should reflect their culture and values when they promote their brand in the marketplace.”
Hobson added that service development and flexibility are also highly valued by healthcare candidates. “Candidates for special positions can request benefits such as career advancement and can also negotiate benefits such as relocation funds,” he said. “Employers need to be prepared for this.”
McCarthy said flexible working arrangements could also attract applicants in the legal profession. “Traditional law firms don’t offer much flexibility, but we know that’s something more lawyers want.
