Free 3d Cad Software Download – Are you thinking about getting started in 3D modeling and 3D printing, but don’t know exactly where to start? Then it probably makes sense to look into FreeCAD – a free but powerful 3D design program. This hands-on tutorial by Bram de Vres will let you create your first 3D project with FreeCAD – from the first sketch to the final product!
FreeCAD is a popular open source design software for creating 3D models of objects on the fly. Best of all – but you already know this – it comes for free (just download it from the FreeCAD website)! The name “CAD” simply means “Computer Added Design”.

FreeCAD is a 3D design program that allows you to easily browse and modify your 3D model by browsing the model history and changing duplicate elements. t can be used on Windows, Mac and Linux and reads and writes many open file formats, including popular 3D formats like STL, OBJ and DAE.

This 3D modeling software is best suited for geometric designs such as precision engineering parts, spare parts, gadgets, cases, scale models, etc. it is less suitable for creating organic objects such as humans, animals or plants.
FreeCAD comes with several “workbenches”. These are basically a predefined set of tools that you will use. For example, you can create a draft by selecting the Draft workbench. Anyway, we’ll start using the Dell workbench – because we’re here to create a real physical object!
In the video below, your instructor Bram will first show you the basics: how to select a “Partial Workbench”, how to start your first project, how to navigate (press Alt + left mouse button), how to add Basque prmtves (box, cylinder, etc.) and how to change the size, radius and position of these properties (in the “Properties” menu).
In the second video, Bram will teach you a few more tricks on how to use prmtves. For example, you can rotate them by changing the angle.

You’ll also learn how to subtract different objects from each other with the Cut tool. For example: if you put a cylinder in a box and take them out, the box will have a cylinder-shaped hole. However, the cylinder can still be edited. Changing the height and radius of t will now affect the height and radius of the hole.
You’ll also learn the opposite of subtracting the first two: combing them. You can do this by selecting both elements and clicking the “Join multiple shapes” button.
To create more complicated designs, Brahm prefers to create two-month sketches first. It changes the workbench to “Part Design” and shows how to set the best sketch orientation (“XY-Plane”).
FreeCAD allows you to draw freehand with the “polyne” tool. If you draw straight lines, FreeCAD will notice them and “constrain” them for your convenience – meaning the line will be perfectly parallel to the horizontal or vertical axis. You can also manually add or delete these restrictions.

Next, you need to precisely define the length of each line by selecting t and select the “Make dmenson” tool. Once all the dmensons are defined, FreeCAD will tell you that your sketch is “fully constrained”. Sound complicated? The video below will show you how easy it is!
Your 2D sketch is ready – it’s about to turn into a 3D model! First of all, click on the “Close edtng in sketch” button, then go to “Tasks” and select “Background”. Selecting “frame” means FreeCAD automatically converts your sketch to the third menu (note: selecting “pocket” removes a three-dimensional shape).
After viewing this 3D object, Bram will show you how to add additional features to t. You can click on any face (surface) of your 3D object and click “create sketch”. What, what?! Yes, this will happen a lot: in FreeCAD you often jump back and forth between sketches and 3D models.
You create a 3D model based on a sketch. Then click on a face (surface) of the 3D model and continue with the next sketch. After that, you convert that sketch to a new 3D shape, etc. This way of working allows adding (from “sketch” to “ramp”) or subtracting (from “sketch” to “pocket”) new features and creating more complicated shapes.

The best thing about it: you can always go back. Every sketch, block, and pocket can be re-edited at any time.
In this part of the FreeCAD video tutorial, you will learn how to use some advanced tps and tricks to work with 2D sketches. Bram will show you how to break down and think logically about your model and how to take shortcuts to get the results you want.
Now we come to one of the most powerful parts of the tutorial. Let’s take a look at the 3D model of an audio button that Bram created. He will go through his design step by step and show you exactly how he created it. It will give you a good understanding of all the workflows needed to create a FreeCAD project.
Time to dry your hands! Brahm has sketched a real spare part and wants to create a t from the sketch. He will go through the design process step by step and repeat everything you learned in the previous videos. If you can create this file, you have successfully mastered this tutorial and are ready to make your own creations now.

Now the last thing to do is the fun part: designing your design in 3D! Save your design (best saved as an STL file), switch to the .materalse 3D printing service and load your page. You will immediately see how much your model costs 19 different materials and more than 100 different elements.
