As a workaround, there are many network monitoring tools and configuration backup tools available on the web to do all these tasks, but they can be expensive. What if you could come up with your own solution using just a few lines of script? This saves you money and you get a fully customized solution.

In this post, I will help you develop a complete network configuration tool to customize the configuration backup of Cisco devices (Routes, Switches, Wireless Controllers and Tanks) with python script using Netmiko Python module.

Python is one of the most popular languages for web automation, but having python alone won’t automate tasks easily. Fortunately someone has done a good job of creating libraries or modules that handle many of the details of network automation using Python. So, if you start with automation, you should first get a basic understanding of Python scripting.
Python network automation libraries give you easy communication and management with multiple network devices. There are several Python libraries/modules that can be used to perform network automation tasks such as Paramiko, Netmiko, and NAPALM. But in this post I am using Netmiko Python library for network automation tasks.
Netmiko library is an enhanced version of Paramiko library. It is a multi-vendor library that facilitates an SSH connection to a network device and performs certain operations on the device, such as executing commands.
