This program was launched in partnership with Achēv, Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre, YMCA GTA and CATA Alliance with funding from Skills Advance Ontario.
OWN (Ontario WebDevelopers Network) The initiative aims to equip 250 qualified Ontarians with the skills needed to succeed in a digital workforce. With the help of over 500 employers, the goal is to help 90% of participants find work in Ontario’s digital economy within 180 days of completing the program.

ICTC’s Outlook 2022 report notes that the increased demand for digital services and the COVID-19 crisis have led to an increase in the digital economy’s share of total employment. Between February and May 2020, employment in the Canadian digital economy increased from 10% to 11% of total employment. Due to this concern and the expected growth in impact, ICTC predicts that employment in the digital economy will continue to grow to over 2 million by the end of 2022.
The program is open to all unemployed and underemployed Ontarians to apply. That said, in Canada, women age 15 or older represent 47%, almost half, of the workforce. That’s a 25% increase since 1976. The COVID-19 pandemic threatens to undermine those gains. According to the catalyst, in the first two months of the pandemic, only 55% of women participated in the Canadian workforce, down from 61% two months before. Women are more likely than men to leave the workforce as a result of the pandemic.

In addition, Rowan O’Grady, CEO of professional recruiting firm Hays Canada, said that a person new to the country with any level of experience will find it more difficult to land a job in the technology sector. It is not necessarily that there is a shortage of skilled workers in Ontario, but that these jobs require strict qualifications. The OWN initiative aims to make it more possible to obtain these services with the support of key players in the technology sector.
Keeping women in the workforce is important. There are job opportunities, but it is often difficult for new women, especially to find the time, funding and support to qualify for these positions.
As part of the initiative, 250 job candidates received technical training through a full curriculum to the Lighthouse Labs Web Development Bootcamp, and up to 60 hours of pre-employment skills training. After completing the program, participants will receive an industry-recognized web development diploma from Lighthouse Labs, as well as employer-matched services. They will connect with employers in Full Stack Development, the most in-demand profession in Ontario.
