Best Electronic Music Production Software – With so many options to choose from these days, choosing your first DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) can be a difficult choice. In this article we will compare and find out which is the best electronic music production software for beginners. We will compare each DAW based on price, features, ease of use, workflow and aesthetics.
Let me start by saying that everyone has their preferences, ultimately it is up to you to decide what is right. The best way to find the right DAW for you is to download a demo of each and see what’s available. That being said, Ableton Live 10 is my favorite. This is mainly due to the large number of very high quality built in plugins, packages and sounds, and the clever workflow. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it in my opinion. Be sure to read on to see the full breakdown and comparison of each DAW.
Best Electronic Music Production Software
Ableton Live is a fully featured DAW used by many big names such as Skrillex, Flume, Deadmau5, and Diplo. It is fully capable of recording, sequencing, composing, and can be used for live performance (hence the name). Out of the gate Ableton Live 10 Suite comes with a library of 5000+ sounds (70GB+) which is great for beginners as you don’t need to dump your sample packs. It also comes with tons of amazing built-in plugins; 18 instruments, 46 audio effects, and 16 MIDI effects. I would say I use built-in effects and synths probably 80% of the time.
How To Choose A Daw (digital Audio Workstation) To Produce Music
Ableton Live 10 comes in 3 versions; Introduction, General and Suite. The difference is that Suite and Standard come with more instruments, sounds, kits and effects, while Intro has several MIDI, audio and send channels.
The workflow is very fast. Everything is neatly laid out in one view, you won’t be minimizing plugins and scrolling around trying to find a window you’ve accidentally hidden. You’ll have an unlimited number of audio and MIDI tracks and each one will be automatically assigned to its own mixer track, so you don’t have to work with tracks. This is a big point to consider because in FL you have to assign everything you create or use in your project to a mixer channel, and then a channel name so you don’t get confused. While this may not seem like a lot of work, when you have to do this for 70+ channels in a project it eventually adds up and can get very messy. So if you don’t consider yourself to be an organized person, Ableton will definitely help you through the chaotic times. There are also tons of videos on YouTube and other resources like models, racks, special effects, max4live tools – more than enough there to get you started and going.
I use Ableton for an average of 5-8 hours a day, and I can’t really think of anything I want to change or improve. The cost is a bit high but you get what you pay for. A lot of people complain about piano recordings but I don’t mind. This is often a problem for people from FL because their piano rolls are more intuitive, sound better and work better. The only other thing that comes to mind is that major version upgrades come at a cost, and some other DAWs offer lifetime upgrades for free.
FL Studio is arguably one of, if not, the most popular DAWs out there. It’s full-featured which means you can use it to record, compose, edit, mix and enhance. There are ways to perform live in FL Studio but I would strongly recommend considering other DAWs if live performance is your main goal. FL Studio has been in development for over 20 years and was originally called Fruity Loops. Big name DAW users include Avicii, Martin Garrix, Madeon, Porter Robinson, Oliver Heldens and many more.
Beginner’s Guide To Music Production: Everything You Need To Know
FL Studio comes in 4 versions; Fruit Edition, Producer Edition, Signature Pack, and FL Studio + All Plugins. I won’t even consider Fruity Edition because you can’t use audio clips or record audio, all your plugins are also FL Studio only and don’t come with VST versions, so if you decide to move to another DAW you will fall. able to download plugins from FL Studio. If you want VST versions of the plugins you should go for one of the more expensive FL Studio packages. Manufacturer, Signature and All Plugin types are all fully featured and each has a list of additional plugins that you really want. Plugins themselves are very powerful and hence the price increase.
The main feature that users will like is the piano recording, which is an important point because this is where you will do most of your writing. Here’s how to get musical ideas from your head in your DAW. In fact, I know some producers who can’t bring themselves to leave FL Studio just because of piano recordings. FL Studio comes with free lifetime updates, so you don’t want to be out of pocket every time a major release comes out. FL Studio also comes with powerful plugins and synths like Sytrus and Harmor (included in the entire Plugin package only). The popularity of DAW means that there are thousands of videos on YouTube and tons of other resources available.
I can’t stand the DAW format, I first started with FL Studio when I was a beginner and found the layout very strange. The playlist, theme menu and plugin windows all overlapped each other and I kept losing things. This obviously gets better with time as you get used to the software, but I found this not to be an issue with other DAWs, and FL Studio was a real pain. I don’t like the workflow when working with audio because you have to open a plugin called Edison to record and edit the audio. With Ableton, you can record and edit audio clips directly without using a plugin. The audio track is also a huge pain. If you want to control any audio or midi clip you must transfer it to the mixing channel before applying any processing. In other DAWs you work directly with the audio and MIDI channels, so using the setup is as simple as plugging in a channel, no extra steps required. The price is also a bit high if you want a full package with all great plugins.
Logic Pro X is Apple’s answer to music production. This beautifully designed DAW has everything you need to record, mix, master and compose. It is the DAW of choice for artists such as Calvin Harris, Nicky Romero, Hardwell, and Disclosure.
Tips For Mixing And Producing Edm
Reasonableness comes in only one form and reasonable price. You can get Logic Pro X for £199 via the app store. Although the site doesn’t clearly state that the upgrade is free, users have now received a free upgrade from Logic to Logic Pro X. So it’s probably safe to assume that the upgrade is free. For this price you get 69 effects plugins, 23 instruments and 9 MIDI plugins. You also get a huge library of sounds (7000+) and their instrumental parts.
Logic Pro X is amazing in my opinion. This is not surprising because Apple always seems to attract beauty. Just check out the “Chromaveb” reverb plugin. I want to open it and it doesn’t close. I want to stay there I want to be in it
Logic Pro X comes with amazing, powerful plugins like Chromaverb (pictured above) and Alchemy – a very flexible sampler and mixer with many engines including granular, additive, spectral, formant and virtual analog. In my opinion, this synth alone is worth £200. This brings me to the price point. Anyone looking to start producing music doesn’t want to be stuck with a £500+ DAW. Logic definitely takes the cake on the front.
Logic Pro X does not support VST, only AU. Most plugins come with both AU and VST, however, if you have a favorite plugin without AU support, this can be frustrating. I can’t run Windows which is a big problem because I tend to switch between Mac and Windows quite often and I don’t like to install multiple Operating Systems on my PC. I also found the learning curve quite steep with FL and Ableton, my intuition was wrong and this can be really frustrating. However, if you are a beginner this should be a no-brainer for you.

Steinberg is a very respected company, known for VST synths like Retrologue and Padshop Pro, but most importantly, Cubase.
