The MEng program requires the completion of a minimum of 30 credits of coursework in addition to a 30-credit bachelor’s degree subject to the following requirements:
Study plan. Before enrolling in any course, all MEng students must have their study plan approved.
Initially, students should develop a draft plan listing their proposed courses and schedule, taking into account course availability. (Not all courses are offered every year) and required semesters. (See Course Schedule) and earlier courses may be considered in lieu of core courses and elective courses as described below. This ensures compliance with course credit requirements. Course rules are burdensome and proper course selection and no schedule conflicts
Minimum course marks. A minimum of 68% is required in each course used for credits. However, applicants can receive a maximum of 6 credits with a score between 60 and 67% if they have more than or equal to 68% in all subjects. May be repeated for advanced standing Subject to departmental approval Students achieving grades below 68% in more than 6 credits are usually required to withdraw due to insufficient academic progress.

Previous Coursework and Transfer Management Credits Transfer credits to the MEng level are consistent with credits specified in Graduate School and Postgraduate Studies. It allows students to transfer up to 12 course credits before or after admission to a current program. This course may not be used to fulfill other credential requirements, subject to certain limitations. It cannot be used as a basis for admission to the current programme. Must be taken within five years of entry into the current program and must have achieved at least 74% marks in the relevant course. For clarity transfer credits may apply to all courses used for credits in the current program. This includes courses at the CIVL 500 level, but not for CIVL 597, and does not necessarily equate to the exact courses. Students requesting credit transfer must consult with the Special Advisor on Studies after admission or prior to enrollment in the affected course, including previous advanced credits. The Special Advisor may make recommendations to the Graduate Advisor for written approval.
For relevant specializations, CIVL 592 (specific instructor to be notified), relevant CIVL 598 sections (if applicable), and/or other courses including 300/400 level undergraduate courses and non-engineering courses.
Final selections must be approved by the Special Counsel. This is usually at the time of course plan approval all the time. Strict adherence to course credit requirements and restrictions across departments is required.
MEng students are generally considered to be working full-time. But can apply for part-time status. and/or leave of absence may be requested during the program. (Such status changes may affect the level of tuition fees charged.) In particular, MEng students may be allowed to take summer leave if they are not enrolled in a course. In any case, the program must be completed within 5 years after initial registration.

Leave of Absence Students may apply for a leave of absence to take up academic work hours. Leave is available for personal, health, professional or other reasons. Leave, not including parental leave or concurrent project follow-up leave, is limited to one year for MEng students. 1 September, 1 January or 1 May and extends for a period of four, eight or twelve months.
The department must approve all leave. Any request for leave for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s note recommending the leave. Students holding leave status are understood not to be engaged in any academic or research work. or using any facilities during leave University students should inform the University after their return. Requests for entry into the building will be rejected while the certificate is being issued. Time spent on leave will not count as part of the time allowed for completion of the degree.
Parental Leave Graduate students who adopt a child into their family are entitled to parental leave. Students are allowed leave between 4 and 12 months.
MEng students are not eligible for financial aid for Graduate School and Graduate Studies. Or financial aid is available through the engineering department. The only exception is that MEng students may apply for teaching assistantships within the department (see Grants) however, a limited number of teaching assistantship appointments are directed to MEng students. Scholarships and awards are available for M.Eng students. . Eligible MEng students will automatically be considered for the relevant award.

Additional time may be accommodated to complete the Force Major degree program. Requests for a one-year extension must be substantiated and supported by the student’s special attorney. But there must be a strong reason for this. A second year extension requires a strong justification by the Special Counsel and an explanation of the special circumstances justifying the exemption. All extension requests must be made through the department by emailing gradsupport@ and must include a schedule showing how the thesis will be completed within the time requested. Extensions for a period exceeding two years shall not be granted.
MEng students have the opportunity to apply for the co-op program to gain paid work experience during their program at UBC. The program typically begins in the fall with a mandatory pre-employment workshop. Then, after completing two semesters, students continue by working for four months in two semesters. (summer and fall) and then return to the university to complete required courses. MEng students apply here.
MEng to MASc or PhD Transfer from MEng to MASc or PhD usually depends on the invitation of the faculty member. For more information, see the transfer degree or program on the G+PS website.
Transfer of programs related to other departments Transfer of such programs is possible only if the original major and related majors are closely related. Considered as a new entry
