In a previous article, we looked at the highest paying engineering jobs in every state. The list was heavily dominated by petroleum engineers, nuclear engineers and aerospace engineers. In terms of salary, the average biomedical engineering salary is more than $100,000 per year nationally, according to the BLS. Naturally, the average annual biomedical engineering salary is a slightly lower $97,410, but by 75 it rises to $123,400.
Looking across the country, the average salary for biomedical engineers in the United States is $101,020. That’s less than twice the national average annual wage for all occupations, $58,260. Of course, biomedical engineers may go through years of education, including undergraduate, masters, and eventually doctorate degrees, to practice professionally in their field. According to BroxScholar, the university has the most bioengineering and biomedical engineering PhDs at Georgia Tech, with 39 PhDs awarded in the 2021-2022 academic year.
Although Georgia Tech produces the most biomedical engineering PhDs, Georgia does not rank among the top states for highest-paid biomedical engineers. Geographically, the top 10 states with the highest average salaries for biomedical engineers are a mixed bag, and it’s hard to discern a clear pattern. The two states with the highest average annual salaries for biomedical scientists are located in the Southwest—No. 1 in New Mexico and no. 2 in Arizona.The other two states in the top 10 are located in New England – no. 4 Connecticut and no. 5 in Massachusetts. The two highest paying states are in the upper Midwest – no. 3 Minnesota and no. 9 Wisconsin. And then there are two other states outside of New England in the northeast – no. 7 New Jersey and no. 10 New York. Louisiana is the only state representing the US South to make the top 10 list.
The BLS does not have wage data for biomedical scientists in all 50 states. Instead, it only has salary data for biomedical scientists in 35 states plus the District of Columbia.
