In all my years at EE Times, I’ve often avoided reporting on “women engineers.” I was afraid that coverage of this beat would categorize me as a journalist whose moral and editorial leanings are feminist rather than technical.

Consciously or unconsciously I have decided to be gender blind. I told myself that my intrusion into the male-dominated engineering world had gone unnoticed because most engineers tend to ignore the gender gap.

They admit that girls and young women could be just as capable as young men. But they explain that despite a number of incentives — like the Girls in STEM movement — there are fewer female engineers in the workplace because women just aren’t that interested in science and technology.
Women Making Gains In Stem Occupations But Still Underrepresented
This is a common misconception among companies who choose not to hire engineers of a certain age because age differences would make older engineers slower and less interested in embracing rapid technological change. , although they might be smarter.
