The MEng program requires the completion of a minimum of 30 credits of courses outside the Bachelor’s degree. 30 credits must meet the following requirements:
Lesson plan. All MEng students must obtain their own approval of course plans before enrolling in any course.
.Students should first develop a draft plan outlining proposed courses and programs, taking into account the availability of courses (not all courses are offered each year) and when they will be offered (see Curriculum), as well as previous courses, required course replacements The courses and electives are selected as follows. This will ensure compliance with course credit requirements, coursework schedule, appropriate course load and selection, and no program conflicts.
Minimum course grades. A minimum of 68% is required in each course taken for credit. However, if a candidate has an average of 68% or above in all courses, a maximum of 6 credits may be accepted with a grade between 60% and 67%. No additional examinations for postgraduate students: Courses with grades lower than 60% can be retaken with the approval of the department to obtain higher grades. Students with a grade of less than 68% in 6+ credits will generally be asked to withdraw due to insufficient academic progress.

Previous courses and transfer credits. Transfer credit arrangements for MEng degrees correspond to those specified by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (see Transfer Credit). These allow students to transfer up to 12 credits of courses taken in the current program before or after enrollment, subject to certain restrictions. Courses cannot be used to meet the requirements of other qualifications; they cannot be used as a basis for admission to a current course; must be completed within five years of admission to a current course; a passing grade of at least 74% in relevant courses. For clarity, transfer credit applies to all courses taken for credit in the current program, but not to CIVL 597, including courses at the CIVL 500 level, and exact course equivalencies are not required. Students applying for transfer credit, including advanced credit from previous courses, should be taken at the time of admission. Or consult with a specialization advisor before enrolling in the affected program; the special advisor may advise the graduate advisor to obtain written approval.
CIVL 592 (must be arranged with specific instructor), relevant CIVL 598 chapters (if applicable) and/or other courses in relevant majors, including 300/400-level undergraduate courses and non-engineering courses.
Final selection of electives usually requires the approval of the specialization advisor when approving the course plan. Department-wide course credit requirements and restrictions must be strictly followed at all times.
MEng students are normally considered full-time students but may apply for part-time status and/or take time off during their course. (This change of status may affect the level of tuition charged.) Students may be given time off during the summer semester if they are not taking courses. Regardless, the program must be completed within 5 years from the date of first registration.

Leave in absentia. Students may apply for a leave of absence from their academic responsibilities. Leave is for personal, health, professional or other reasons. Leave for MEng students is limited to one year and does not include parental leave or permission to attend concurrent courses. Holidays usually start on September 1st, January 1st or May 1st and last for four, eight or twelve months.
The department must approve all clearances and leave for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s note recommending the leave. It is understood that students on furlough will not undertake any academic or research work or benefit from university opportunities while on furlough. Students must notify the University immediately upon return. During the permit period, building access requests will be denied. Vacation time does not count toward time to complete your degree.
Parents agree. Any graduate student who welcomes a child into the family is eligible for parental leave. Students can study for 4 to 12 months.
MEng students are not eligible for Graduate and Graduate School-administered financial aid or financial support through the Department of Engineering. The only exception is whether MEng students may apply for teaching assistantships within the department (see Funding); however, only very limited teaching assistantship appointments are for MEng students. There are several scholarships and awards available for Masters in Engineering. student. Eligible Master of Engineering students will be automatically considered for applicable awards.

Extenuating circumstances may require additional time to complete the degree program. Requests for a one-year deferment must be justified and supported by the student’s specialization advisor, but require compelling reasons. The extension to the second year requires a compelling justification from the Specialization Advisor and an explanation of the exceptional circumstances in which exceptions can be made. All deferral requests must be made by emailing gradsupport@ and through the department, along with a timetable showing how the dissertation will be completed within the requested time. The extension shall not exceed two years.
MEng students have the opportunity to apply for co-op programs to gain paid work experience during their program at UBC. Typically, the program begins with a mandatory pre-employment training workshop in the fall; then, after completing two semesters of study, students continue for two four-month periods of study (summer and fall) before returning to campus as needed Complete the course. MEng to MASc or PhD. The transition from MEng to MASc or PhD is usually at the invitation of the faculty member. For more information, see the Transfer Degree or Program section on the G+PS website.
Include planned transfers from other chapters. Such program transfers are possible if the original and intended disciplines are closely related. Otherwise, if the intention is to transfer to a separate discipline, then it is considered a new admission.
