Physiotherapy Internships In The Philippines
We need editors to review papers and videos submitted to the university. We are looking for editors with the following: I was born and raised in the Philippines. After receiving my medical degree, I moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where I worked as a general practitioner for many years. . I learned about Canadian immigration options from my aunt who lives in America. As a physical therapist, she said I qualified as a “smart immigrant” and that Canada would be a good place to raise a family.
I was intrigued by this proposal, but I was also disappointed when I started my career in Riyadh. However, I always thought about the future of my two-year-old son and all the possibilities I wanted for him. So my husband and I progressed through the immigration process and arrived in Canada in September 2011. After we arrived in Ontario, I had to find a way to pay the bills while My certification is reviewed by the Canadian Association of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR).
I was hoping to find work as a physical therapy assistant or rehabilitation assistant. But, it was more difficult than I thought, and I struggled to find any kind of work; although it is difficult to be asked to volunteer at clinics or hospitals. I have found that without ties to Canada and work experience, getting a job can be a challenge. Luckily, my husband and I found a factory job through a mutual friend. Our work is only temporary; he commutes about 2 hours to the factory while working 12-hour shifts. It was just life back then.
Our daughter was born in September 2012. It was exciting, but also stressful and overwhelming. Also, I worked hard to pass my English test and I really missed working as a physical therapist. A year after submitting my paperwork to CAPR, I was finally deemed eligible to take the Physical Therapy Examination (PCE) to obtain a license in Ontario.
New Jersey’s Top Physical Therapy Doc Credits Filipino Parents
I was terrified of the exam. An acquaintance of mine, a foreign-trained physical therapist, suggested that I apply to the University of Toronto’s bridge program to help prepare for the PCE and gain experience in the Canadian health care system. I joined the program in April 2013.
It is amazing to be part of a class of Internationally Trained Physical Therapists (IEPT) from all over the world. Many of my classmates have master’s degrees and have different specializations in physical therapy, but we all do the same thing while trying to get licensed in Ontario. My classmates became my friends, and there was never a moment of shame in studying together.
The teacher was very supportive; I felt I could turn to them with questions and they would always be happy to help. At that time, my son was 4 years old and my daughter was only 6 months old. My husband worked nights and took care of our children during the day so I could attend the program and prepare for PCE. We were both exhausted, but I loved getting back to my passion. I don’t know what I would do without my husband’s support.
In the bridge program, I gained knowledge and skills that will prepare me for my written and practical exams. Both internships helped me develop my clinical skills and understand how things work in a Canadian hospital or clinic. During my training, I built a strong professional network with my colleagues, clinical instructors, and training supervisors. When I applied for a job, I asked one of my hiring managers to be my reference. I attribute my success in getting a job to his reference.

I graduated from the bridging course in February 2014. In November of the same year, I passed the written and practical parts of the PCE. I can finally apply for my Ontario Physiotherapy License!
Shortly after I received my license, I began working independently in private clinics. I received my first physical education internship at Providence Healthcare Hospital, where I also completed my second internship in the bridge program.
Today, I work as a full-time physiotherapist in the outpatient department at Pembroke Regional Hospital. I am very grateful for my family’s support and loyalty during my journey. At Grandison, our goal is to provide excellent care and exceptional service to our clients and patients.
Over the years we have been fortunate to bring hundreds of interns from abroad to help them achieve their dreams of working and living in America.
