Piano chords are created by playing more than 1 note at a time! There are many types of chords, but in this post we will focus on triads. A triad is a 3-note chord type. A great way to remember what the Triad means is to think of a tricycle – just as a tricycle has 3 wheels, the Triad has 3 sounds!

Major triad chords consist of 3 notes stacked on top of each other. The notes used to create a major chord are important. What is more important is the distance between the notes of the chord. The distance from one note to another is called an interval.

Major chords are created when the distance between the 1st and 2nd notes of the chord is a major 3rd (4 half steps, ) and when the distance between the 2nd and 3rd notes of the chord is 3 minor (3 half steps). check out this C major chord on the keyboard below:

As you can see, the notes C, E and G make up the C major chord. The distance between degrees C and E is 4 half steps. The distance between the note E and the note G is 3 half steps.

Half steps are counted by moving between 2 notes next to each other. This includes white and black buttons. So the distance between the C key and the black key immediately to the right (C#) is half a step. The distance between the same black key (C#) and the D key is also half a step.

With this system, we can count 4 half steps between the first note of the chord and the second note of the chord, which are C and E:

Minor triad chords also consist of 3 superimposed notes. When creating a minor chord, you must pay attention to the distance between the individual notes of the chord. Remember that the distance between one note and another is called an interval.

Minor chords are created when the distance between the 1st and 2nd notes of the chord is 3 minor (3 half steps, ) and when the distance between the 2nd and 3rd notes of the chord is 3 major (4 half steps). the exact opposite of how we do a major chord! Let’s take a look at this C minor chord on the keyboard below:

As you can see, the notes C, D# / Eb and G make up the C minor chord. D# and Eb are the same note – but we’ll use one or the other name for the different chords! When talking about a C minor chord, we will refer to this black key as Eb instead. The distance between the note C and the note Eb is 3 half steps. The distance between the note Eb and the note G is 4 half steps.

To learn the keyboard sounds, look for a group of 3 white keys enclosing 2 black keys, then 4 white keys enclosing 3 black keys. This pattern is stable on all keyboards. The first white key in the set is the C key, and the next white key is D, then E, F, G, then again A, B, and C. The black keys are a semitone between the white keys. The black key between C and D is C sharp or D flat, the key between D and E is D sharp or E flat, and so on. There is no black key between B and C or E and F.
